Use of beard oil depends on a few factors and differs between beardsmen. Factors like skin type, beard length and whether you suffer from common beard issues all come into play. We cover all of these below in detail. Our general rule of thumb is that if you’re new to beard grooming, we recommend using it every day to begin with.
How Much Beard Oil Should You Use?
One 5 cent sized piece on the palm of your hand is sufficient for shorter beards. Beard oil tends to have a solid consistency and doesn’t evaporate when exposed to the air, so using a small amount will reach your entire beard.
If you’ve got a medium to longer beard, then we recommend doubling this to a 20 cent sized piece of beard oil. Then spreading this throughout your beard. Begin with your skin first and then gradually work downwards towards the end parts of your beard.
When Should You Apply Beard Oil?
Beard oil is best used in the morning, after a warm shower. This ensures that the pores are open and the beard oil will sink into the root of the hair follicle to absorb the full benefits. Also remember to apply to a semi-dry beard, as this will help spread the beard oil around without damaging hair follicles in the process.
If you have a shorter beard and suffer from red itchy skin, beardruff or flake build up then we suggest starting off with using the beard oil every day until your symptoms are gone. After this, you can reduce your frequency to once every other day.
For medium to longer beards, you should use beard oil at least once per day. As your hair is longer, you’ll need to use slightly more beard oil to get to the ends of your beard hair. Your hair will need more constant hydration so using it twice per day is recommended.
How to Apply Beard Oil Properly
1) Use the beard oil dropper to place a small 10 cent piece size of beard oil to the palm of your hand.
2) Rub your hands together to spread the beard oil evenly.
3) Run your hands and fingers through your beard. Start with rubbing your skin underneath the beard first. Then gradually work your way down to get to the ends of your beard.
4) For a quality finish we recommend using a boar bristle brush to spread the beard oil more evenly and get to the root of the hair follicles. Your fingers alone cannot deliver the beard oil to the deeper parts of your skin.
