The answer is different for each person. For best results we recommend washing your beard 2-3 times per week on average. This can depend on several factors such as Beard Length & Density, Skin Sensitivity and Lifestyle/Environmental factors.
Beard Length & Density
For longer and thicker beards, you may need more frequent washing. This is because your beard has a larger surface area and so it is susceptible to attracting more particles in the atmosphere, debris and dust. For shorter and less dense beards, you can wash less frequently.
Skin Sensitivity
For oily skin you may need to wash more often. As your beard builds up moisture more quickly. Debris and other bacteria can breed more rapidly in this type of environment. For more sensitive skin you may wash less frequently, to avoid irritiation and leaving your beard dry.
Lyfestyle/Environmental
Depending on the environment your exposed to on a daily basis, you may need adjust the amount of times you wash your beard. For example a beardsman who is exposed to the elements through working outside or in a mine, will wash his beard more frequently during the week, than someone who is indoors all day. The amount of exercise and perspiration can also play a factor. The more sweat you build up the more you may need to wash your beard. Although, if you’re going to the gym everyday, this doesn’t mean you should be washing your beard everyday. Still stick to the 2-3 times per week. A good intermediate habit to do in between washes is to run warm water in your beard when you’re showering. This helps keep it fresh without needing to wash and strip away your natural oils.
Can You Wash Your Beard Every Day?
Everyday beard washing is not recommended, and you should avoid doing this. Only if you suffer from common beard issues (beardruff, itchiness and skin redness), then you can wash everyday for a few days. After your symptoms are gone, you should reduce the frequency to avoid the adverse outcomes of over washing.
Signs You’re Washing Your Beard Too Often
You will see signs that you’re over washing your beard when you start to get a dry, coarse beard that becomes brittle over time. Your beard is a sensitive area and needs time to produce its natural oils in between washes.
The reason we don’t recommend excessive beard washing, is that it can strip away your natural oils in your beard. If it begins to feel itchy and coarse this is also a sign you may be over doing it. Washing is important for strong and healthy beard growth, however, over washing your beard can be just as detrimental.
What Should You Wash Your Beard With?
You should only wash your beard with a dedicated gentle beard wash or beard cleanser. This ensures that your beard is getting the right nutrients and the ingredients are tailor made to what your beard needs. Washing your beard with regular shampoo can strip out all your natural oils and leave your beard brittle and so you should avoid using regular shampoo to wash your beard.
What Should You Do After Washing Your Beard?
After washing your beard, you can finish the process with a beard conditioner that remoisturises your beard without having the feeling of moisture being locked you’re your beard. Using a beard conditioner is great for detangling hair, providing nutrients to the core of your hair cuticle and reduces friction.
A dedicated beard shampoo and conditioner is the best combination for a healthy beard. Alternatively, you can use a beard oil to prep the beard and beard butter to restore moisture back into your beard. Beard butter is great for taming flyaways, giving you a natural look and licking in moisture and scent in your beard that will last throughout the day.
